Product Overview
What Are TMT Bars?
TMT stands for Thermo-Mechanically Treated. TMT bars are hot rolled and then rapidly cooled at the surface while the core cools more slowly, giving the bar a hard outer layer and a softer, more ductile core. That combination is what makes TMT steel bars suitable for structural reinforcement.
In reinforced concrete, concrete carries compression while TMT reinforcement bars carry tensile and bending forces, so the two act as one structural element. The ribs rolled onto the bar are not decorative: they key the steel into the surrounding concrete so load transfers without the bar slipping. Bar size, grade and spacing are set by the structural designer for each project.

One point of contact from enquiry through quotation and dispatch. Straightforward answers on availability and timelines.
Buying Guide
How to Choose the Right TMT Bar
Confirm Project Requirement
Start with the element being cast and the load it carries. The drawing or bar bending schedule from your structural designer answers most of it.
Select Size & Grade
TMT bar sizes are given as nominal diameter in millimetres. Grade and standard follow the design, so list every diameter the project needs.
Estimate Quantity
Convert running length into weight, since TMT bars are priced by weight. Allow for laps, cutting and wastage as your quantity surveyor normally does.
Confirm Delivery Details
Delivery location affects lead time and landed cost. Mention site access, unloading and any staged delivery at the enquiry stage.
Bar size, grade and reinforcement detailing should always be confirmed against the structural design or bar bending schedule prepared for your project.
Weight Guide
TMT Bar Weight & Size Guide
TMT bars are quoted and dispatched by weight, while drawings and bar bending schedules are prepared in running length. The industry converts between the two using this single approximation, derived from the density of steel and the cross-section of a round bar. A 12 mm bar works out to 12 × 12 ÷ 162 ≈ 0.889 kg per metre, so a 12 metre length weighs roughly 10.67 kg.
| Diameter | Approx. kg/m | 6 m Weight | 12 m Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 mm | 0.222 kg | 1.33 kg | 2.67 kg |
| 8 mm | 0.395 kg | 2.37 kg | 4.74 kg |
| 10 mm | 0.617 kg | 3.70 kg | 7.41 kg |
| 12 mm | 0.889 kg | 5.33 kg | 10.67 kg |
| 16 mm | 1.580 kg | 9.48 kg | 18.96 kg |
| 20 mm | 2.469 kg | 14.81 kg | 29.63 kg |
| 25 mm | 3.858 kg | 23.15 kg | 46.30 kg |
| 32 mm | 6.321 kg | 37.93 kg | 75.85 kg |
Figures are approximate and should be verified against supplied material documentation.
Quality & Documentation
TMT Bar Quality & Documentation
On a reinforcement order, quality comes down to the specification and the paperwork agreeing with each other.
Product Specification
Confirm that what arrives is the product described in your order, and that markings and packing correspond to the consignment documentation.
Grade & Size
Grade is a design decision, so check it against the order rather than assuming it. Measure diameter and length on a sample basis at receipt.
Material Documentation
Keep the documentation supplied with the consignment in your project records. Available documentation can be requested at the time of enquiry.

TMT Bar Questions, Answered
Common questions on TMT bar sizes, grades, weight and ordering.
Not covered here? Reach us on WhatsApp or at info@samridhisteel.com.
What are TMT bars used for?
TMT bars work as reinforcement steel inside concrete, carrying the tensile and bending forces that concrete alone cannot. They are found in slabs, beams, columns, footings and retaining walls across residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure construction — effectively every reinforced concrete element on a modern site.
Which TMT bar sizes are available?
TMT bar sizes are quoted as the nominal diameter in millimetres, and construction enquiries most commonly cover 8 mm to 25 mm, with larger diameters on heavier structures. Availability depends on our current product range, so share the diameters from your drawing or bar bending schedule and we will confirm what can be arranged.
How do I choose the right TMT bar size?
You do not choose it independently. Bar size is specified by the structural design, normally through a drawing or bar bending schedule prepared by a qualified structural engineer. Smaller diameters typically serve as stirrups, ties and distribution steel, larger diameters as main reinforcement. Send us the drawing if you are unsure.
What is the difference between TMT bar grades?
A grade designates the strength characteristics of the steel, and the applicable standard defines how that grade is manufactured and tested. Different grades suit different structural and approval requirements. Which grade applies to your project is a design decision, so confirm it with your consultant and share it with the enquiry.
How is TMT bar weight calculated?
The common industry approximation is D² divided by 162, where D is the bar diameter in millimetres and the result is kilograms per metre. A 12 mm bar therefore works out to roughly 0.889 kg per metre. Actual weight varies with rolling tolerance and rib pattern, so verify against the documentation supplied with your consignment.
Can I request TMT bars for bulk project requirements?
Yes. Project, commercial and repeat requirements are supported, and dispatch can be phased around your site schedule rather than delivered in one consignment. Share the total quantity, the phasing you need and the delivery location, and we will plan the supply around that programme.
What information is required for a TMT bar quotation?
Five things move an enquiry forward quickly: the bar size or sizes, the grade and applicable standard, the quantity, the delivery location and your project timeline. If you have a bar bending schedule, sending it is faster than describing the requirement in words.
